How to Make Your BBQ Grill Last Longer

Who doesn’t love a nice summer BBQ, especially during a Lake of the Ozarks vacation? We recommend that all our vacation home and condo rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks provide a BBQ grill for guest use. This is an amenity that our good return guests have come to expect. If you don’t have one, you could be missing out on rentals. And if you do have one that’s not in great condition, it could affect your rentals as well. Keep reading for some tips on how to make your BBQ grill last longer!

Cover Your BBQ Grill

The easiest way to protect your grill and extend it’s life is by covering it during inclement weather. We suggest that you get a grill cover, placing it back on the grill after every use. This protects it from rain, wind and debris. During the winter season, when you don’t see very many rentals and it’s too cold to grill anyway, consider putting the grill under cover somewhere. Keeping it out of the elements is the easiest way to prolong the life of your grill.

Clean or Replace Your Drip Pans Regularly

One of the biggest issues we see with BBQ grills is that the drip pans get neglected. Owners, housekeepers, and especially guests, forget to empty them. Then they overflow and make a huge grease mess that is difficult to clean up. It’s important that these drip pans be cleaned out regularly. A great way to reduce the time it takes, and the mess it creates, is to purchase the disposable drip pans/liners. They make a variety of different sizes and shapes for all styles of grills. When it gets full, you simply remove the disposable pan and replace it with a new one.

Deep Clean Your Grill Each Spring

While you should make sure to use a grill brush to clean the grates after each use, and clean out those drip pans, you should also consider doing a deep clean of your grill once a year. That means taking it apart and cleaning all the parts before putting it back together. After an entire summer of use, there’s a lot of grease and food debris in there. Just letting that sit and never cleaning it, will significantly reduce the life of your grill. In addition, guests will notice that you haven’t taken care of the grill. If it looks dirty or old, they’re likely to not want to use it and may even make that known in a negative review about your property.

Upgrading Your Grill

If your BBQ grill is at the end of it’s life, rusted out or falling apart, and you decide it’s time to invest in a new one, consider a griddle style model instead. Getting a Blackstone or something similar with a griddle top is the way to go! These are easier to keep clean and, therefore, should last longer. Instead of having grease and food dripping down onto the burners all the time, there is one spot where you scrap the grease right into the drip pan. This reduces the regular wear and tear on your grill, while also making it easier for guests, housekeepers and yourself to keep it clean.

One last thing to consider about BBQ grills for vacation rentals, make sure that the size of your grill is adequate for the amount of people that your property will sleep. If you have a 5-bedroom home, but a small BBQ grill that will only fit 4 burgers, your guests are not going to be able to cook enough food for their entire group on that grill.
